Cool People, Good Work: Veterans Community Project

In honor of Veterans Day, our latest installment of Cool People, Good Work highlights the Veterans Community Project (VCP). VCP’s mission is straightforward and powerful: eliminate veteran homelessness by providing transitional housing and comprehensive, 360-degree wraparound support. Their motto captures the spirit: “Veterans housing Veterans, armed with the strength and support of the community.”

Who They Are

Founded in 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri, VCP was created by a group of veterans who had been serving in different roles across the system—and saw firsthand where those systems fell short. They recognized that many veterans weren’t getting the tailored support they needed, and they set out to build a better model.

Tiny Homes as a Real Solution

The challenge — shelters don’t work for everyone. Many veterans experiencing homelessness also live with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Symptoms like hypervigilance and the need for personal space make traditional shelters a tough—and sometimes impossible—fit. As a result, many avoided shelters altogether.

The VCP solution: Tiny Homes.
VCP moved away from shelters and toward safe, private, and dignified standalone homes. Each unit is 240 square feet—small, but intentionally designed. The layout is PTSD-informed, every resident has a lockable door, and the moment a veteran enters, everything inside the home is theirs.

Case managers are on-site for consistent, 1:1 support, and each home allows pets—a major barrier in traditional housing programs, and a meaningful lifeline for many veterans.

Proven Impact

VCP’s model works. More than 85% of residents transition from homelessness into sustainable, permanent housing.

What began in Kansas City has now expanded to additional locations in Arizona, Colorado, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and St. Louis. VCP operates as a 501(c)(3) funded primarily by the public—less than 5% of its support comes from federal sources. Their expansion is thoughtful and criteria-based, and they continue to explore new communities where a village can thrive.
