IndiView: Weekly Market Update 2/23/26
Below is a summarized transcript of the IndiView: Weekly Market Update for 2/23/26. The video is included at the bottom of this post.
Tariffs: Struck Down… Then Rebuilt
The Supreme Court limited the prior method used to implement tariffs, but President Trump quickly adjusted and introduced a new 15% global tariff using a different mechanism.
Despite renewed trade uncertainty, markets have reacted far less dramatically than they did during last year’s nearly 20% decline tied to tariff headlines. Volatility around trade policy appears to be diminishing, with investors increasingly focused on company fundamentals rather than policy noise. The ultimate economic impact of tariffs remains difficult to model given ongoing uncertainty.
PCE vs. CPI: Inflation Sends Mixed Signals
Last week’s CPI report looked “Goldilocks” — not accelerating aggressively and better than expected.
However, the latest PCE reading came in hotter than anticipated. Since the Federal Reserve places more weight on PCE than CPI, this complicates the outlook for rate cuts. While one data point does not create a trend, even modest re-acceleration in inflation makes near-term cuts less likely. The current data suggests the Fed remains in a holding pattern rather than preparing for a major easing cycle.
Interest rates may continue to fluctuate more on economic data than on shifting expectations of Fed policy changes.
Walmart: Swimming Upstream
Walmart’s earnings were solid, but the more important story is strategic.
Management highlighted increasing engagement from higher-income consumers — a shift driven by improved logistics, delivery infrastructure, and convenience. Walmart is no longer viewed solely as a lower-income retailer. If the company continues gaining share among mid-to-upper income households, long-term growth could prove more sustainable.
The debate now centers on whether that strategic shift justifies current valuation levels. Bulls see expanded market reach; skeptics question whether future acceleration can match expectations.
USA Hockey: 46 Years in the Making
A quick non-market note: USA Hockey captured gold for the first time since 1980.
The dramatic game-winning sequence was a reminder that momentum can shift quickly — in sports and in markets.
